We’ve just been informed that four of our graduates have been nominated in two categories for this year’s awards: Keith Bogan in the Digital Media category (no surprise there!), and Carole Fannon, Ciaron Fitzpatrick and George Beattie in the Visual Communications category. We’re obviously delighted for all of them, and look forward to the results being announced in mid-September.

You might remember that about a year and a half ago, we put out the call for past graduates to contact us if they would like a post on the blog about what they’ve been doing since leaving college - where they’ve worked, how life has been for them as designers, where they completed their further education and in particular, what their work is like now. We do this for the benefit of our current cohort of students as a way of showing them what life as a designer can be like.

Graphic Designer: Prominent Hospitality Group based in the Midlands

The position is a fixed-term contract, covering maternity leave from the last week of June 2011. The job entails providing highly creative design work that adheres to the associated Design Brand Standards of the Hotel group. We are looking for a creative designer who can work in a fast paced environment and adapt and apply our brands to the various markets we participate in. We would provide an internal brief for each individual piece of work. Applicants would need to have at least two years experience in the industry behind them, be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite 4 and have a good understanding of the prepress and print processes. Knowledge of Microsoft programmes is also needed. The successful candidate will be able to work on a PC platform.

Job Specification:

1 Report directly to, and liaise with the Commercial Director of Hodson Bay Group.

2 Together with the Heads of Sales & Marketing, prioritise all jobs in line with seasonal demands and priorities.

3 Have strong conceptual skills and understanding of corporate branding, layout, colour theory and typography. This should be evident in the portfolio presented at interview stage.

4 Have strong commercial awareness which will lead to creating the most suitable solution to a brief.

5 Design of all collateral (including adverts) for each property with the principal objective to drive enquiry - consistent with our existing brand guidelines.

6 Introduce innovative ideas and creative solutions to achieve ‘stand out’ in the marketplace.

7 Have the ability to effectively manage multiple projects/tasks of varying complexities, meet deadlines and work well under pressure.

8 Have excellent organisational, time management and communication skills.

9 Be able to work on your own initiative, but also take direction when given.

10 Managing the order process - from the completion of all jobs within the specified deadlines, collecting and comparing quotes to the issuing of the PO.

11 The maintaining of spend administration via the Hotel Groups' marketing spend accruals process.

12 As part of the team, contribute to all initiatives as part of the collective effort to continuously improve our target marketing efforts across all market categories.

David Rooney payed his annual two and a half day visit to Design at AIT last week, and worked with the third year Visual Communications group. The feature article is on the life of Phil Lynott, and the extension of the exhibition that's currently running in the St Stephens Green centre in Dublin. Hot Press music magazine will feature some of these illustrations in the edition that hits the stands in Dublin tonight and the rest of the country tomorrow. Thanks again to David and Hot Press, and to the students for two and a half days of slog to get the images ready.

A bit of a whirlwind collaborative project this - the third year Visual Communications students were set a week-long brief to design a complete CD package for the ‘Collabor AIT’ charity music compilation. Students from the Music Technology course at AIT came up with the concept, drafted in the Vis Comm students, and the CD should hit the racks in Ireland very shortly. Vilma Lizaityte’s work was finally chosen by the judging panel, and all monies raised will be donated to the Walter Stevenson Cancer Ward at St James Hospital in Dublin.

Some older work we didn’t get to show you: year two students on the Level 7 programme designed this packaging from a brief devised by their Marketing lecturer and ourselves to launch a new Dutch product on the Irish market for the first time.

It’s a pourable custard that carries the name ‘Vla’ in Holland, but has no direct translation into English, and no comparable product exists on the Irish market either.

Their job was to re-name the product, develop the brand identity and design the new packaging. There’s two more we’ll add to the list in the next couple of days to show the full range of solutions the students delivered.

Second Year Design [Communications] completed the ‘I Wish...’ brief just before the mid-term break, and some of the, erm, direct results are posted above. They were asked to think about developing a ‘constitution of the self’, and to design a poster detailing what they wished for in terms of themselves, their families or their communities. The range of topics covered include taking more risks personally, owners allowing their pets to soil pavements in small town Ireland, being able to say what you really mean to those who need it said to them, dodging men who are only out for one thing, banning soap operas, having manners on the road, just wanting to be yourself and judging people purely based on their appearance. Apologies for the language - it's very context specific, something you won’t get from not being able to read the small type.

Economy - Society

The 2010 Douglas Hyde Conference takes place on 15th of October in the Abbeyfield Hotel, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Mary Hanafin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport will officially open the Conference, which will highlight the role of Creativity in Education, Innovation, Economy, and Society. Presented by Roscommon County Council Arts Office in association with the Western Development Commission (WDC), this is the second in a series of three Douglas Hyde Conferences focused on the Creative Sector.

Last year the two organisations reshaped the Conference as a platform for research into the Creative Sector with a view to having the research findings impact on policy and programmes at local, regional and national levels. Frank Dawson, Roscommon County Manager said, “This is a sector which has huge development potential in both rural and urban contexts and which impacts positively on all aspects of our society, and our economy. For the 2010 Conference, we have brought together academics, artists, politicians, commentators and public bodies to examine four distinct roles of creativity in society and the Creative Sector. Together with these experts, we look forward to discussing the opportunities for our region and to gaining a comprehensive insight into the value of creativity so that we can fully develop its role in our future.”

Lisa McAllister Chief Executive of the WDC added, “Creativity has long been associated with the Western Region. The 2008 WDC study ‘Creative West: The Creative Sector in the Western Region’ identified 4,779 creative businesses operating in the Western Region directly employing over 11,000 people and generating an annual turnover of €534m. This contributes €270m to the Gross Value Added of the regional economy. It is therefore a major economic contributor to the Region and we believe it can be grown significantly, even in these difficult economic times.” The Conference will be chaired by poet and broadcaster, Theo Dorgan and centres on four keynote addresses and panel discussions.

Work continues apace on the new studios - the lower picture was taken earlier today, and by Tuesday of next week should look remarkably close to finished. The buildings officer assures us that all work will be complete by September 13th, ready for occupation and a new start for the students in a new location.

More news next Monday 6th September when all our students return to college, joining the 39 1st years that have just accepted their CAO offers.

Further Renovations...

In early July of this year, the much-mooted transfer of the Design courses from our centre-of-town location to the main campus finally became a reality. The photographs above show the current state of play in our new space in the old Engineering block of the college, which is due to be complete by the end of this month.

The premises will house seven studios, a photography studio and darkroom, an image making studio, a printmaking studio and the majority of the technicians and staff offices. Two major parts of the courses - the computer lab and the Digital Media studio will be housed across the street in the brand spanking new Engineering building, which is due to be completed around the same time.

Six of the new studios will feature 3 moveable walls/partitions, which will open out to three large semi-divided cubes to house the end of year exhibitions. We'll post more photographs of the work in progress in the coming weeks, and especially in the run up to the start of the new academic year so that our returning student body can see what they're getting into!

I think we'd also like to keep that little digger in situ (see pic 5) - Sheila could cast it, we could make multiples of it and park them in unusual locations, use it to run into town to get photographs developed... the list of it's uses are endless!

Caoimhe Feerick-Ryan Memorial Prize launched at the Athlone Institute of Technology

The Caoimhe Feerick-Ryan Memorial Prize has been launched at Athlone Institute of Technology. The perpetual award is in memory of the former design student from Belmont, Co Offaly, who died in a car accident in July 2008. It will be presented each year to the student who achieves the highest mark in design in their final primary degree exam.

The prize has two components: a piece of sculpture of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, which will be held in AIT and a financial award of €500 which will go to the successful student. It will be awarded for the first time in October of this year and thereafter on an annual basis. Seán Feerick, sponsor of the memorial prize and Caoimhe’s uncle, said that the idea for the prize was “to commemorate and celebrate Caoimhe, her creativity, her unique individuality, and her extra specialness as a person”. It was also something, he said, which would “look to the future and reflect in some way what it means to be moving into one’s twenties – the openness, creativity, idealism, the sense of everything being possible, those snatches of genius and immortality, which are so present in the lives of all of those who stand on the threshold of their twenties.”

The piece of sculpture which embodies the award was executed by the Greek artist Yannis Souvatzoglou, and uses the traditional idiom of bronze along with the more modern material of plexi-glass. According to Mr Feerick, “the concept blends the traditional with the contemporary, to create what is a timeless piece reflecting openness, a warmth, and strength of personality, which were important traits of Caoimhe’s character. The head facing left in the eyes of the viewer, reminding us of where the heart is situated in the human torso, provides a visible reminder of the warmth that the piece seeks to convey.”

Welcoming Caoimhe’s family, particularly her parents Noel and Maureen, and her brother Thady, to the event, AIT President, Prof. Ciarán Ó Catháin, said that “remembering Caoimhe in this way allows us to record her unique contribution to the institute. The trophy and the bursary are a fitting way to both remember her and to annually recognise the skills and qualities which she so clearly embodied.” The President also thanked Seán Feerick and Paul O’Connell, saying that the institute was indebted to them for “their exceptional generosity” in sponsoring the memorial prize.

The 2010 nominations for the ‘Best In Show’ competition, organised by The Digital Hub in Dublin, have just been announced and our sincere congratulations go to Edel Flynn who has won the Visual Communications category. Edel’s work, featured above, will now go forward for the overall prize of ‘Best In Show’ and online voting has just opened today on the Digital Hub’s website.

‘Edel Flynn from Clonsilla, Dublin 15 won the Graphic Design / Visual Communications category in Best in Show for a design for a book aimed at making the works of William Shakespeare more accessible to a contemporary urban audience. Ms. Flynn has just completed her final exams in the BA (Hons) Visual Communications course at Athlone Institute of Technology, and can now avail of a work placement with Red Dog, one of Dublin's leading graphic design consultancies.’

Design at AIT Graduate Exhibition 2010

As you’ll see from the invitation, the shows for our suite of courses officially open on Friday May 28th at 6.30pm at our Northgate Street Campus, with the opening ceremony being performed by the President of the Institute, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin.

We would draw your attention particularly to the date of the closing ceremony - Friday June 4th at 3pm, which has been devised this year to honour the memory of Caoimhe Feerick-Ryan, who would have exhibited with this year’s group of graduates. Anybody who knew Caoimhe is very welcome to attend on that day.

We’ve just been informed that, as last year, two of our BA(Hons) in Design in Multimedia students have been shortlisted in this years’ short film competition, and the results will be published towards the end of the month.

Our congratulations go to Anne Marie Lynch and Marie Doyle, who’s films entitled ‘A Serious Mix Up’ and ‘Silent Drinking’ respectively are now available to view at www.dare2bdrinkaware.ie, and we would naturally encourage you to vote for your favourite of them in the public voting section.

We’ll host small versions of their work on the blog with the official press release by the end of the week.

Hot Press Magazine: Current Edition

In the current edition of Hot Press music magazine - that’s the one with Paul Weller on the front - on page 51 in the Frontlines section, you’ll see a great range of student work from the third year Design (Communications) and Visual Communications groups which was undertaken again with David Rooney.

David arrived on Tuesday evening, and the students had to produce publication-ready images by the following Friday morning. There was a bit of a twist this time though - the article that the work was created for hadn’t yet been completed, and the Hot Press editorial team decided to build the article around the work that resulted from David’s sessions with the students.

Congrats to Darragh Kelly who also got to write a short piece for inclusion in the main article, and you can read his particular take on the recession on page 53, entitled ‘Recession Virgins’.

A sincere thank you to David Rooney and the Hot Press team for continuing with this venture - its our third year in print nationally, and provides the students with valuable exposure to the wider community at large.

Under the government’s National Drugs Strategy 01-‘08, the Midland Regional Drugs Task Force (MRDTF) is one of ten set up in the country. The aim of the MRDTF is to deliver a more co-ordinated response to tackling the problem of drug misuse in Counties Laois, Offaly, Longford and Westmeath. In 2008, Mr Pat Carey T.D., the former Minister of State at the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, allocated once off funding to the Midland Regional Drugs Task Force to run a Cocaine Awareness Campaign.

One of the initiatives that the Task Force ran in relation to the funding allocated was an initiative in conjunction with Athlone Institute of Technology (Health Promotion, graphic design and student union department) and the Health Service Executive Health Promotion Service. The initiative was to run a cocaine poster competition which was open to third year graphic design students at AIT. The students began designing their posters in September 2009, and the three winning entries are shown above. The launch and prize giving for the competition will take place on Thursday 15th April 2010 at 3pm at AIT.

Hot off the printers, 2nd year Design (Communications) have just finished their double page spread project, with the usual array of topics and approaches to show. Ciaron’s very mature typographic interpretation of an article on the earthquake in Haiti comes first, followed by Anna’s article on Crash Blossoms - what happens when tabloid editors take out too many words in a headline resulting in nonsense sentences that can be interpreted in the wrong way. Claire found an article in Baseline magazine that had the audacity to criticize that venerable institution known as Gill Sans, and Maria’s article on Fashion and the Cult of Celebrity pretty much speaks for itself.

Second Year Design (Communications) students got a short, sharp shock for a project when they came back after Christmas. In conjunction with the Healthy Campus initiative at AIT, they were asked to design a double-sided beermat to promote Sexual Health Awareness Week which runs for the first week in February.

The brief was very clear - get the message across about preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections by protecting yourself, and getting tested for STI’s if you haven't been too careful. Laura’s mat got first prize and is off to print today, and Karl’s came second. Joanne came third, and we just got her artwork!

We’ll post some of the others that didn't make the cut - this was a five day brief because there’s nothing like a real world deadline to sharpen the senses after Christmas!

Radiohead’s free digital download bundle for ‘These Are My Twisted Words’ inspired this project. In previous posts on the blog, we featured a music graphics project early last year, and decided to move with the times - how best could our students apply their skills to design for music downloads?

Rather than just getting a digital booklet with the tune or album that’s bought, we got them to look at cut out and keep/self-construct formats that echoed the songs they chose, and worked from there. Karl’s work is for Radiohead’s ‘Let Down’, and suits the mood perfectly. We'll upload more results from this project in the next couple of days.

It's been ages since we last posted something for you to look at, and there's a veritable avalanche of new material on it’s way to show in the next week or two, thanks to the closing of semester 1 and the assessment of the work of eight year groups of students.

Above are some of the results from the semester 1 Image Making project for second year, entitled ‘Ephemera’. The students were asked to think about ephemeral things, and produce conceptual books on whatever they came up with. Bryan’s is inspired by the removeable graffiti on unwashed vehicles and the very temporary nature of that pursuit. Joanne’s is based on the mayfly, and Emma’s is about everybody’s fifteen minutes of fame.

All groups were asked to understand the meaning of their given painting, and re-perform it in a contemporary setting. Thanks to Paul Timoney to who did sterling work on the composition and performance elements of the brief.

’Straying Closer To The Truth’

On Friday November 27th at 7.30pm, an exhibition entitled ‘Straying Closer To The Truth’ opens at the Franciscan Friary Multyfarnham, featuring a variety of artists who have availed of the two week residencies provided free by the Friars since May 2008.

Two of our staff members will be exhibiting. The show runs until Friday December 4th, and is open for seven days from 10am and will close soon after each evening programme has finished. A range of workshops, performances and symposia are open to any member of the public who wishes to avail of them throughout the week.

In case you’re wondering, Multyfarnham is six miles outside Mullingar off the main Dublin/Sligo road. It’ll be well worth the visit.

On Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November coming, the Athlone Institute of Technology Open Days are happening at the main campus on the Dublin road.

Design at AIT will have their usual space towards the stage end of the multi-purpose hall, and will be showcasing work from all year groups from the three courses we have on offer.

In our infinite wisdom, we have decided to move the portfolio advice service downstairs beside the exhibited work this year. This service is available to any student who is seriously considering applying to AIT for design in February 2010.

Some of our current cohort of students will also be on site to give you their view of the courses, as well as our staff members who will be very happy to talk to anybody interested in pursuing visual communications or multimedia as a career.

Second Year Design (Communications) have just completed their first project - designing T-Shirts for a chosen topic/event/cause, and some of the results are posted above.

Karl’s Helvetica T’s demonstrate his love of that typeface, while Ciaran’s long sleeve tee folds into a face mask as protection from swine flu. Joanne’s is about the day-to-day behaviour that irritates cohabiting couples, and George’s is about mining minerals in the Congo for the manufacture of i-Pods, laptops and digital cameras that has so far claimed the lives of five million people.

The ‘08/‘09 ISTD Student Assessment Scheme briefs included a music-based project which asked the student to select two songs from two decades of the twentieth century and produce a typographic interpretation of both in on-screen or published form. Alan Casey, whose work is shown above, went one further and also designed a typeface to fully accentuate his concept - his rationale behind the project is fully reproduced below. Alan achieved a pass for his efforts.

Bullets For Your Brain
Given that everything was to stem from the lyrics of two songs selected from different decades of the twentieth century, it was vital that they harbour a depth of meaning that led far beyond themselves. The song If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next (1998 - Manic Street Preachers) shares the inner struggles of an individual who answered the call to confront Fascism in the Spanish Civil War. An exhortation to oppose evil and involve oneself with life, it succinctly exposes the fear and disillusionment that accompany, and all too often are all that remains of, ideology and courage. In complete opposition, Tomorrow Never Knows (1966 - The Beatles) expresses the belief that life and all its pains are illusory and that by involving oneself in it one is merely reinforcing the illusion and prolonging the torment. John Lennon apparently wrote the song having taken LSD and read The Psychedelic Experience.

This contemporary reworking of The Tibetan Book of The Dead (from which it freely quoted), claimed that the ego-death experienced under the influence of LSD and other psychedelic drugs is essentially the same as the Tibetan forty day process of death and therefore requires similar guidance.

I decided that the lyrics to both songs would act as a beginning or jumping off point from which concepts, quotations and possibly imagery would radiate. Thus the final design would emerge from, but be far more than, an interpretation of lyrical content. Wishing to steer clear of mockpropaganda, Buddhist mandalas or overt psychedelia the idea of texts balancing/neutralizing/reinforcing one another came to dominate my thinking.

The juxtaposition of seemingly incompatible truths if handled sensitively and with restraint might capture in print a measure of the uneasy equilibrium these apparent contradictions possess.

It’s September, all our students are back, and we’re into the swing of things relatively quickly and with great ease. Karen set up her design company, Pixel Design, in 2006 and now specialises in designing websites for the arts, not-for-profit and advocacy sectors. She is the talent behind the sites of - among others - Dance Ireland, Kilkenny Arts Festival, DIT, Light House Cinema and Poetry Ireland. A number of her designs have been nominated for Irish Web Awards and in 2008 she won the Web Designer Excellence category in the Irish Internet Association and Enterprise Ireland’s net visionary awards.

So, how did Karen go from humble AIT student to award-winning designer running her own design studio? Well, after graduating in Design Communications in 1997, she spent five years honing her design skills at Webfactory, Ireland’s largest web design company. Here she had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects which was great experience and was lucky enough to work with many talented designers.

In 2002, Karen became Creative Director at a smaller design company that focuses on design for both print and web. Along with heading up a design team this gave her an insight into running a small business as well as more direct contact with clients and gave her the confidence to strike out on her own.

Throughout her career, Karen has been an active member of the Institute of Designers in Ireland which is the professional body representing and supporting designers in Ireland. She is currently New Media representative on the IDI council and would encourage design students and graduates to join!

Lucy studied Design [Communications] at AIT from 1991-94, along with Simon Roche (see Simon’s profile below…). She then went on to gain an MA at Central St Martin's School of Art and Design, and although the MA course was in a period of upheaval it did at least instill a measure of resilience and self reliance in her. A year in publishing gave Lucy a huge grounding in the technical aspects of production that is rarely taught at college. It also convinced her to go freelance - to work for herself.

Lucy formed the London-based design studio ‘Lucy or Robert’ in 1998 with her partner and husband Robert Carter. The studio's first two projects couldn't have been more different from each other: one was a fine art photography book, Venise; the other a trade exhibition stand for a sign company, for which Lucy or Robert devised a narrative based on the communication between worker bees, transposing the human office worker for the bee with fees instead of honey, using all manner of signing techniques to deliver the story. The latter project shaped the studio's direction taking them out of the familiar comfort zone of print and into the 3D environment.

Their current projects almost always involve words and images in the built environment: museums, galleries, workplaces, gardens, public spaces: they do a stunning line in toilets too. Complex projects can take up to four years to complete and are undertaken as part of a team which can comprise of any or all of the following: architects, exhibition designers, lighting designers, sound designers, illustrators, A/V companies, curators, writers, historians, case dressers, conservators, picture researchers and access forums. Production work varies with every project: one led to designing crockery; another to selecting young lime tress for an avenue.

Two new projects are opening soon. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford will open 39 new galleries to the public; Lucy or Robert have worked with the Museum's team since 2005, beginning with masterplanning a graphic strategy and culminating in the detailed design of six of those galleries, while the remainder are detailed by the Museum's own in-house graphics department. The studio produced the design concept and much of the detailed design work for the Natural History Museum's Darwin Centre which opens in October.

The Holocaust exhibition, which was Lucy or Robert's first major exhibition project, remains their yardstick. The project was identified by the National Lottery Commission as a benchmark for interpretive exhibition design, received a D&AD commendation in 2001 and was commended by the European Museum Forum in 2003. The studio moved from London to Bruton in Somerset two years ago, where the country air is doing it good.

Simon Roche studied Design [Communications] at AIT from 1991-94 before going to Croydon School of Art and Design to complete his Honours Degree. He moved back to Ireland after this and began as a freelance designer and lecturer in graphics in both Tralee IT and AIT where he worked part-time for eight years.

After some years with these colleges and also annoying bands into letting him design their sleeve artwork, he was appointed art director of Hot Press magazine where he redesigned the publication and changed it from a tabloid to the smaller custom size it retained until recently. Setting up on his own after Hot Press, he still has clients in the music industry, producing a lot of album sleeves and merchandise over the last few years, as well as the more bread-and-butter business of consulting for some international advertising and PR firms. Thanks to broadband, Skype and mobile phones he now spends a lot of time in ‘wonderful’ Copenhagen working from his new shop in the city centre while still working mainly for Irish clients.

Current projects include a new redesign of the work for the National Performing Arts School, an identity and signage for a photographer’s studio and continues to design the now online editions of ‘State’ music magazine – while also co-organising the SweetTalk Copenhagen design events. He is rarely happier that when the smell of fresh print wafts through the studio air and has finally finished his own company’s new identity after, oh, years.

Simon also won the PPAI Designer of the Year in 2008 for State magazine, and you'll bet his mother is proud.

Darren Doyle graduated from AIT in 2003. His plan was always to set up his own Graphic Design consultancy, but realizing that more real world experience was needed before setting out to achieve this, he went to work at a midlands print company. For the first year, Darren worked as a designer and learned much about the print process and how the industry works. In his second year there, he was promoted to studio manager and found himself responsible for the day to day running and management of incoming jobs. “It was during this time that I started drifting away from the process of design and found myself much more involved in the actual business side of things.” By the time year three came around, Darren felt the time was right to jump ship and start his own company.

Studio93 opened for business in February 2007 on the main street of Moate, Co. Westmeath. “ I can honestly never remember a time when I was sitting at my desk with nothing to do. Even when there were no jobs waiting to be done, I was always busy . When I wasn’t working on something, I was working on getting something to work on. You can’t ever sit back in this industry if you want to succeed - you have to be hungry, and you have to stay hungry”. Studio93 has since worked on local, national and international web and print projects, perhaps most notably Irish Hairdresser International magazine which the studio has art directed for the last two years - some sample spreads from it are posted above.

‘Being a design consultant in the midlands is not unlike being a design consultant in Dublin, Dubai or Denmark - its not where you are, its how much you want it! My advice to anyone setting up would be to go and work for someone else for a few years and learn the ropes. See how they do things and figure out how you might do things better. Then when the time is right, make your move but be warned - if you do set up yourself, be prepared for long hours, very few weekends off, paper work and sacrifices. If your not totally committed forget about it - its not for you. “

We close for the Summer officially today, but are waiting to hear back on some outstanding competition results that we’ll post about - should we be successful of course!

To those graduates that contacted us about having their work shown on the blog - we’ll be in contact within the next fortnight to detail how we’ll go about doing this - thanks to all those who got back in touch - there’s quite a range of work to show from you all.
